Chennai:

The Madras High Court has dismissed a plea to stop the release of controversial multilingual film Vishwaroopam in Tamil Nadu as it hurts the sentiments of the Christian community.

C. Jebakumar George, a Christian who filed the plea, saying the screening of the film will cause great prejudice against Christians in India.

The high court, however, dismissed the plea on Feb. 5.

“This is the second attempt to stall the release of the movie,” the bench comprising acting Chief Justice Elipe Dharma Rao and Justice M.Venugopal said.

The film, which as banned earlier in Tamil Nadu, was released in the state today. It was up for public viewing in the rest of the country since last week.

The 95-crore film, produced by actor-director Kamal Haasan, ran into trouble after Muslims organizations in Tamil Nadu expressed anger over the film.

They said the film depicts Muslims in bad light.

Its Hindi version, “Vishwaroop” is doing good business across North India.

The petition sought direction to the Central and State Governments and the Central Board of Film Certification to ban the Kamal Hassan-starrer ‘Vishwaroopam’ in its present form throughout the country until the film is edited to be in conformity with the guidelines under XII and XIII of the Cinematograph Act.”

The petitioner said he watched the controversial film in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala on Jan. 27.

He said that he was shocked to find many scenes to be very violent and derogative of religions and races.

George alleged that the film offends the sentiments of the Christian community.
