Panaji:

The Goa police yesterday booked a Catholic priest and some 1,500 unidentified people for alleged attempt to murder a police team.

A clash on Saturday night between police and parishioners of St. Francis Xavier Church, Velim, near Goa state capital of Panaji, ended in the hospitalization of six people, five of them police personnel.

A six-member police team had gone to the church around 9 pm for what it said was to make some inquiries.

This was the same parish where income tax officials conducted a raid on February 6 evoking widespread condemnation.

Two wounded constables are still under observation at a hospital in Margao, the state’s commercial capital. One of them had suffered a skull fracture in the clash.

Two members of the Central Reserved Police Force and an official of the Criminal Investigation Department were discharged yesterday.

The village continued to be tense even on Sunday as people gathered near the church after hearing about the police case against the priest and others.

However, regular Sunday Masses were conducted at the church yesterday.

The police maintained that their people had gone to the church to get an update on the income tax department’s earlier raid on the residence of parish priest Fr. Romano Gonsalves.

The parishioners said the raid had lowered the dignity of the priest. They alleged their pastor was targeted for making a pronouncement about how to vote in an upcoming election.

The election commission asked the tax officials to apologize and return 6,000 rupees they had taken from the priest after a probe proved they conducted the raid on a false report.

The police said their fact-finding team had gone to the church on Saturday night after the election commission asked them for an update on the situation in the village for its meeting with the police scheduled for Sunday.

The police said the commission had received warnings that the parishioners would boycott the March 3 assembly elections unless the raiding party apologized unconditionally and divulged the name of the person who had complained against the pastor.

When the police team arrived at night, some parishioners rang the church bell to gather people. A crowd at an election meeting nearby rushed to the church on hearing the bells.

In the ensuing pitched battle, the local people beat the police team and wounded five of them. A civilian was also wounded.

Another police team from Cuncolim rescued their colleagues and rushed the injured to hospital.

Sources close to the parish priest alleged the police team demanded to know which political party the priest and his parishioners were backing.

The police admitted they made a mistake to go to the priest at night, especially in view of the tense situation in the village.

While the police maintained the attack was unprovoked, the villagers said the police had no business to come to the church at night and their intention was to intimidate the priest, who had been a target of politicians in the past.

NOT SOLD, BUT WHERE HAVE ALL THESE CHURCH PROPERTIES GONE

Hello Friends,

We regret for brief delay in bringing out this voicemail. Like everyone, we too were busy with BMC elections. However it is all behind us and we can concentrate on our business.

As the headline indicates, we are looking out for Church properties, supposed to be belonging to St. Anthony’s Church Trust, Malwani. In spite of several attempts, parish authorities were refusing to divulge property details to parishioners. A concerned parishioner, who was once a member of Parish Property Committee came to our rescue and provided us with the list of properties. He was eased out of it for causing hindrance to corrupt behavior of other members, including the SOLE TRUSTEE.

Armed with this list, we have approached Archbishop Cardinal Oswald Gracias to prevail upon the Parish Priest and SOLE TRUSTEE to reveal present status of all these properties.

It is not easy to sale Trust properties through proper channel; i.e. obtaining sanctions from Charity Commissioner Etc. Besides, the property committee, including the SOLE TRUSTEE, has affirmed that NO PLOT HAS BEEN SOLD. In that case all the plots must be in the possession of the parish, unless they have been disposed off clandestinely, bypassing the laid down procedures. Let us wait and watch.

Meanwhile, we would request you to come with similar list of properties belonging to your parish. We can similarly, and then approach the Archbishop. Please remember, the properties belong to parishioners and we must protect them from land sharks and property brokers sitting on church committees.

Archbishop Oswald Gracias of the Bombay Dioces...

To,                                                                                                        22nd, February, 2012

Most Rev. Cardinal Oswald Gracias,

Archbishop of Mumbai;

Sub:    PROPERTIES BELONGINGTO ST. ANTHONY’S CHURCH TRUST, MALWANI.

Your Eminence, You are well aware of the parishioners concern towards the mismanagement by Church properties by Parish Priests, by the virtue of the powers vested into their hands, as SOLE TRUSTEE. We have been writing on this matter from time to time, without any response from Church Hierarchy or the Parish Priests.

Thanks to the concerned Parishioners, who have provided us with a list of Properties, supposed to have been owned by St. Anthony’s Church trust, Malwani. We, along with parishioners of St. Anthony’s Church, Malwani; would like to know from the Parish Priest, the SOLE TRUSTEE, and the custodian of Parishioner’s Properties, the status of these properties at present. In spite of many attempts, the parish priest is silent on this issue.

The Parish priest and the members of Property Committee have affirmed through the letter submitted to AEC in the context of the Inquiry( Exhibit L, Pg. 77 to 79) that “NO PLOT HAS BEEN SOLD BY US TO ANY PARTY”; therefore, we believe, these properties are safe in the custody of the SOLE TRUSTEE.

We ask, WHERE ARE THESE PROPERTIES?

We are sure, you too your Eminence, will agree that parishioners have the right to know if the person in whom they have reposed the faith, is competent and faithful enough towards his responsibilities and duties. And the only way to gauge him is for him to be transparent and disclose the status of these properties. If any of these properties have been sold through a proper channel, as described by H. E. Bishop Bosco Penha, in the letter dated October,21, 2011 to Noel Corriea of OL of Nazareth Parish, Bhayander; the Parishioners must know.

Yours always, in OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST,

Hindu pitches for Christian president

She plans to mobilize support for the issue by visiting various states and meeting heads of political parties.

Posted on February 24, 2012, 8:34 AM

By Ritu Sharma
New Delhi:A former officer of the Indian Administrative Service has urged the government to give chance to a Christian candidate for presidentship during the forthcoming presidential elections.

“A Christian president would give representation to the people of the community who are feeling let down by the government,” said P. Sivakami at a press conference in Delhi yesterday.

Sivakami, who heads the Tamil Nadu-based Samuga Samatuva Padai party, said that she has made the demand as her party’s goal is to serve the minorities and the neglected communities.

She plans to mobilise support for the issue by visiting various states and meeting heads of political parties.

She also plans to raise awareness about the issue among people through posters and handbills.

Sivakami said that the candidate should have a good record, be concerned about public welfare, should not have excessive leaning toward political parties and be able to carry himself/herself in international circles.

“Right now I do not have anyone in mind but with time a suitable candidate will emerge,” she said.

The former IAS official said that the appointment of a Christian president would empower the community.

“We had presidents from every minority community and its time that we have one from the Christian community,” Sivakami said.

The elections for the new president are due in July.

Bishop urges Christian business persons to build houses for poor

Bishop urges Christian business persons to build houses for poor

He also wants the business people to use their old vehicles as school buses.

Posted on February 22, 2012, 8:19 AM

New Delhi:Bishop Peter Machado of Belgaum has urged Christian business persons to set up a housing colony for the poor as part of their corporate social responsibility.

“I am looking forward to someone to help me in a housing colony for the poor in Belgaum,” the prelate said in a letter to business persons in Maharashtra state.

Private space in Belgaum has shrunk as the city has been expanding rapidly over the years. This has forced many Catholics to live sandwiched between shanties and rented places. “On the outskirts lands are still available with accessible routes to the city where I could plan out a colony for the poor,” Bishop Machado said.

He also wants the business people to use their old vehicles as school buses. The diocese on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border has set up several schools since the prelate is “a firm believer” that only “good education” can bring development.

“But transport and eventual accessibility of these schools to the villagers and rural folks is difficult,” the prelate said. He wants Christian firms to donate their old buses to the diocese that cannot afford to buy new ones.

The prelate also wants the business people to build a residential enclave for Non Resident Indians in Belguam, which he claims, has “salubrious climate and evergreen environment.”

“The lands are still affordable and being on the border of Maharashtra and Karnataka, you can still have best of both states,” the prelate said.
