From the Desk of, Dr (Sr) Mudita Menona Sodder RSCJ;

Fellowship of Indian Missiologists (FOIM-National) linked to the International Association for Missiological Studies (IAMS) was born in India in 1991. In fact, the first consultative meeting of FOIM was held at Gyan Ashram, Andheri, Mumbai, in 1990. As agreed by the scholars gathered there, the inaugural meeting was then held at Purnodaya, Bhopal in August 1991. The inaugural paper read by Fr Jacob Kavunkal SVD on the topic, Towards an Indian Missiology was published in the Indian Missiological Review -14/1(1991) 71-89.

FOIM is an inter-denominational Fellowship of professional Missiologists engaged in the service of the church in India. It links scholars and teachers of Mission in the different Christian Churches in a fellowship of study, reflection and experimentation. As such, it is a unique ecumenical organization where a variety of topics bearing on the mission of the church are treated. Collective thinking, sharing of insights and fruits of research from various churches in India, presented through papers and publication in the form of a book every two years is the contribution FOIM makes to the church of India.

The objectives of FOIM are to promote Missiological studies; to relate the message of Jesus Christ to the Indian context; to collaborate with missionaries in their work through reflection in terms of the cultural, religious and socio-economic context of India and to experiment with new methods in evangelization.

The first annual meeting of FOIM was held at Union Biblical Seminary, Pune in 1992 and in 1994 the first FOIM series entitled, Bible and Mission in India Today was published by St Paul’s, Bandra, Mumbai. To date, FOIM has published fifteen books on various topics connected to Mission. The last FOIM meeting was held in Guwahati. The theme of this Bi-annual Conference and Research Seminar was, Digital Generation: Challenges and Missiological Response. The book will be released during the forthcoming FOIM meeting this year which will be held at the Diocesan Pastoral Centre at Nadiad, Gujarat from 24th to 26th October 2017. The theme for this year’s meeting is, Christian Mission and Contemporary Challenges. FOIM meetings are held in different parts of the country, with a view to experiencing the mission in that particular area. The association is supported entirely by contributions from members and from local sources.

The FOIM meeting began as an annual meeting. Slowly, it metamorphosed into a bi-annual Conference and Research Seminar. This was done not just due to time constraints, but mainly with a view to improving the quality and content of the papers presented. It was also done to ensure that all the members could attend, share ideas and enjoy camaraderie. The papers presented at the meetings are discussed and later published.

As FOIM celebrates its Silver Jubilee this year at Nadiad in Gujarat in October 2017 at the bi-annual Conference and Research Seminar, it is awaited with bated breath, since it has become a scholarly springboard for innovative ideas and a useful tool for both missionaries as well as students in theological training institutes. Beginning with a humble active membership of just 18 scholars, FOIM today prides itself with an over 100 membership and many vying to join/present or publish papers at the Conference and Research Seminar. Today FOIM has become a name to reckon with.

If you are a serious research scholar or are hoping to become one and are truly interested in participating in this Conference and Research Seminar at Nadiad, Gujarat, kindly get in touch immediately with Dr Jeyaraj Dasan-FOIM Secretary, India (# 8008004726, email: OR Dr (Sr) Mudita Menona Sodder RSCJ-FOIM President, India (# 9869266651/8291255181, email: /
