New Delhi:A young Hindu man, who acted as Jesus in a Hindi movie, says it was difficult to portray the character at first.

“It was not so easy in the beginning but as the shooting progressed I could manage to bring his character in me,” said Ankit Sharma, who was in New Delhi to promote his film ‘Christaayan’ (the journey of Christ).

The 25-year-old actor said when he was chosen to do the film, he had no idea about Jesus.

“I watched many movies on Jesus and read books about him,” said Sharma.

The six-hour long film on the life of Jesus was released on Dec. 2 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

Sharma said that Jesus’ teaching of love and brotherhood is similar to other religions.

“I realized that Jesus is a simple, loving, caring and friend of all,” said Sharma, who did his acting course in Pune.

The film took seven year to complete with a team of some 200 amateur actors and technical staff.

The team included scientists, professors, doctors, teachers, social activists, farmers, atheists, students, media persons, priests and religious sisters.

Most part of the film was made in Madhya Pradesh but the team of actors had to visit 10 states including the north eastern part of India.

Its director and producer Father Geo George said over 80 per cent of the artists were “friends of Jesus” from other religions.

The Divine Word priest said that during the Year of faith, the film would be a great help if used during catechism, faith sharing, retreat and preaching.

Fr. George said he plans to go to all the states to promote his film as it is the best medium to reach to the masses and evangelize.

The Indore-based priest said some Hindu organizations have asked permission from him to use his film.

“We also plan to give it to Doordarshan for broader reach,” he added.

Father George said the movie is a “filmy pilgrimage, a soothing and graceful divine touch in our faith and personal life.”
