JAIPUR: Chief minister Vasundhara Raje invited the Jesuit priests who run St. Xavier’s School in the city to partner the government in skill development initiatives undertaken by the Rajasthan State Livelihood Development Corporation (RSLDC). She said she was pleased to see that the Jesuit priests had a vocational training school and that it was making a difference to the lives of students from all sections of society.

She lauded the management of St. Xavier’s for setting up a balwadi that admitted 30 students each year, helping children from poor families complete their education at the school.

The chief minister had special words of praise for the school band, which put up a performance as part of the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the school. There were many young schoolgirls playing the drums in the band, and Raje said she was pleased to see girls marching as part of the band.
The CM called upon students to be sensitive to others and open to diverse points of view. State BJP president Ashok Parnami also attended the platinum jubilee celebrations of the school.
Apostolic Nuncio Salvatore Pennacchio, diplomat of the Vatican and representative of the Pope in India and Nepal was present too.

Vasundhra Raje probably had her education in her formative years in a Christian School / College — hence she perhaps feels the Jesuits
can contribute to the enhancement of her personal credibility —
BUT then there is the age old saying ” BEWARE THE GREEKS BEARING GIFTS ” — She is a hard core MODI acolyte hence the Jesuits should be careful when dealing with this wily woman

Let us take this as an opportunity to translate Jesuit teachings into reality, especially for sustainable development of the society, starting with Rajasthan.

The Jesuit priests will act as Advisers and not as elected Ministers / MLAs. Their inputs will be sought by Vasundhra Raje primarily in the areas of education, health, vocational training and protection of environment. In the field of environment, the Jesuits have their own jewel in Fr D.S. Xavier, Head of Department of Environment, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Dr Xavier is a well-known exponent on environment studies, having written internationally papers on Arsenic concentrations and bacterial contamination, A Dugwell Program to Provide Arsenic-Safe Water in West Bengal, India and Global warming and Water war”-An investigation into humanity’s war on nature for water.

This is an opportunity to put into practice what the Jesuits teach in their institutes particularly management courses at XLRI and XIM. Students of these management institutes can be used for hands on training in management applications in the fields of education, health and smooth running of a government.

Mrs Vasundhra Raje must be complimented for going against the stream (opposition from many from RSS and her party). So Jesuits should seize this opportunity and prove what they preach from the pulpit can be practised too to the benefit of the masses!

This offer of Vasundhra Raje should be accepted by Jesuits as an opportunity to put into practice what they have been preaching. They will be working as Advisors and not as elected MLAs holding portfolios. Their advice and expertise is likely to be sought in the areas of education, health, teaching the art of fishing (vocational training) and care of the environment. In the field of environment, the Jesuits have an international expert in Fr. Dr. S. Xavier, Head of Department of Environmental Studies, St Xavier’s College, Kolkata. He has written several papers on Arsenic concentrations and bacterial contamination which have been internationally acclaimed.

The Jesuits can test out all they teach in their management institutes at XLRI, XIM, etc. and would be a big opportunity for management students of their institutes to get hands-on training in running a government.

Vasundhra Raje must be complemented for going against the stream (opposition from her own people including RSS) and coming forward with the open offer to the Jesuits to help her run the government. This has never happened before. The Jesuits should “Encounter Christ” in real politics!
