Mumbai: The Catholic Church is celebrating the pope’s first visit to India.
Cardinal Oswald Gracias, also the archbishop of Bombay, led a special mass at Holy Name Cathedral on yesterday.
“On December 1, 1964, Pope Paul VI had arrived here to celebrate the International Eucharistic Congress. We have devised a series of programs until Dec. 7 to mark the occasion,” said Fr. Nigel Barrett, spokesman for the archdiocese.
Cardinal Gracias blessed and handed the Eucharist to around 80 parishes which will take turns to lead processions over the next few weeks, “rather like the Olympic torch relay”.
