Christian leaders condemn Modi’s ignorance on anti-Christian attacks: SILENT VOICE Exposes his lies;

The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate made the remarks in a television interview last week.

Does,’t Narendra Modi remember orchestrated attacks on Christians and their places of worship in Dangs district of Gujarat?

Here is a reminder for him. Check following report that appeared in FRONTLINE Magazine Jan.   16 – 29, 1999

Christian leaders have condemned the statement of Narendra Modi that he was unaware of any attacks on members of the community and their places of worship in India.

The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate made the remarks in a television interview last week.

“What he said was an utter lie. The onslaught against Christians by Right-wing groups has always been cause for concern. The Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, has been attacking members of the Christian community and vandalizing churches across India,” said Richard Howell, general secretary, Evangelical Fellowship of India, which represents about 45 churches across the country.

Expressing shock and dismay at Modi’s statement, the community leaders said he cannot win their trust if he feigns ignorance about their sufferings.

“How can he forget the gruesome attacks on tribal Christians in Gujarat’s Dangs district in 1998 during the NDA regime when members of the Right-wing cadres burnt down churches? Atal Bihari Vajpayee, then Prime Minster, himself had visited the district to take stock of the situation,” Howell said.

He said 22 churches were burnt in 2002 in Gujarat and several members of the community were attacked by the cadres of Vishav Hindu Parishad (VHP). The VHP is part of the Sangh parivar.

Replying to a question on what steps he would take to ensure no churches are broken down if he becomes Prime Minister, Modi said: “I have never heard of such incidents taking place.”

Vijayesh Lal, national director, Religious Liberty Commission, said Christians continue to be attacked and their places of worship are being vandalized over the past few years in states like Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh.

“Surprisingly, Modi pretends to be ignorant and unaware about such attacks on Christians. If this is the case then why should we trust his promises of a secular India as mentioned in the BJP’s election manifesto,” he asked.

    For Narendra Modi to have told the TV Interviewer last week: “I have never heard of such incidents (attacks on Christians and churches) taking place” sounds too naive for a prime ministerial candidate for whom ignorance cannot be bliss.

    How can Modi who flaunts designer dress and has all ultra-modern communication at his disposal, say he has not heard of the ghastly and well-documented incidents like atrocities and arson on Christians and their churches (1) in the Dang region of Gujarat just before Christmas 1998 (2) in Kandhamal Orissa on 25 August 2008 where, as per official reports dozens of Christians were killed and over 54,000 people rendered homeless and (3) the burning alive of Graham Steins and his two sons inside a jeep in Orissa on Jan. 23, 1999. Modi is conveniently in a state of bliss when all the democracies of the world with free flow of information know of years of on-going court cases on the above carnages including the Gujarat riots of 2002.

    The TV presenter is equally to be blamed. He / she just wanted to hog the limelight of having interviewed Modi. He should have pressed the button of slide shows and shown Modi and the viewers recorded photographs, videos and press releases of the above mayhem.

    Christian groups should, as a matter of right, ask for a live interview with him before the completion of the on-going election, and in the backdrop of the above proofs available in public domain, bind him to assurances on security of minorities,
