Sister of HOLY FATHER: ‘He never wanted to be pope’

“The expression on his face spoke of a fullness of heart,” the pope’s sister said.

Buenos Aires:

Pope Francis’ only surviving sibling has said that the former never wanted to be a pontiff and that she had prayed privately that he did not rise to head the Vaican.

“He didn’t want to be pope and when we chatted privately about it, we joked at the prospect and he would say ‘no, please no’,” said Mara Elena Bergoglio, pope’s sister.

Maria, who is 11 years his junior, said she did not want him to become pope because “he’s going to be very far away and second because it is such a large responsibility.”

She maintained that she is “totally proud” that her sibling was the first pontiff from Latin America.

Speaking from her small , brown-brick bungalow in the shabby town of Ituzaingo in the old manufacturing belt south of Buenos Aires, Maria described her brother as a “poor man” as she imagined his thoughts just before walking out on the balcony, the massive crowd in Saint Peter’s Square in his first appearance as the pontiff.

She said she couldn’t predict what her brother will do as pope, but noted that “his inclination” has always been “to work for the poor, the most marginalized.”

She said that she had met John Paul II when her brother was made a cardinal in 2001 and been struck by an air of sadness.

“When I fell to my knees to kiss his ring, I looked up and saw a gaze of such love, but at the same time of infinite loneliness,” she said.

“Although the gaze of my brother reflects love, I don’t want it to also reflect loneliness,” she added.

But from watching Pope Francis on television, she said he appeared joyful with his new role.

“The expression on his face spoke of a fullness of heart,” she said.

“I feel we have to pray a lot for him because we are living in a very troubled world at a difficult time for the church, we need God permanently,” she said.

The pope is the oldest of five children — three boys and two girls. His three other siblings, Alberto, Oscar, and Marta Regina are no more.

For goodness sake Jorge Bergoglio has been elected to be the Pope. He is not some frog in a science class laboratory, who is being dissected by everyone who thinks fit. Leave the poor old man alone and let him concentrate on the work he has been chosen for. I hope God gives him the strength to weather all these small storms that are being raked up. The folks who should be afraid of this poor man are all the wily clergy, whose antics he will hopefully put a stop to. LET US PRAY FOR THAT STRENGTH !!!!
