12th, November, 2012;
Hello Friends,
As the title suggests, it is obvious, parishioners could not approve Parish Priest’s certain decisions. They therefore, oppose them through various means. Every parish in the Archdiocese is facing such problem. Parish Priest, on using the authority bestowed upon them, as SOLE TRUSTEE, force their decisions on the parishioners, against their wish. Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) is the vehicle that is always used in such cases. It is needless to say that PPC members always vote in favour of what the Parish Priest proposes. They have their reasons to do so. What are the reasons? You draw your own conclusions. Not necessary that they all agree with the proposal; therefore, most of them remain silent. This silence of the members then construed as their affirmation.
Those who oppose vocally are always in minority. They are termed as trouble makers, anti establishment, antichrist etc. and are gradually eased out of PPC.
A few lay parishioners from St. John the Evangelist Church, Marol; approached SILENT VOICE, with a problem the parish is likely to face if the parish authorities go ahead with their decision.
We have apprised the Archbishop, H. E. Cardinal Oswald Gracias, through following letter. Hopefully, the Archbishop will prevail upon the Parish Priest to revoke his decision, if it has already been confirmed; or desist from it, if it is not yet decided.
P. S.:              H. E. Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Put up a call to “Yours truely”, and said that he would be looking into the matter. We are grateful to His Eminence.

                                                                                                                                    10th, November, 2012,
Most Rev. Cardinal Oswald Gracias,
Archbishop of Bombay,
Sub:     Parishioner’s Opposition, to Parish Priest’s decision.
Your Eminence,
There is no doubt in the minds of faithful, that Church authorities, particularly at parish level, have become materialistic. We have taken up such issues with you from time to time, from various parishes, at the behest of parishioners. To these parish authorities, monies have taken the precedent over Devotion and Faith.
It is reliably learnt that Parish authorities of the St. John the Evangelist Church, Marol; are in the process to handover the well cared and preserved School ground for the Community function of other faith, for ten days, for a handsome amount in return. Parishioner’s opposition to it, is being thrown out of the window, by Parish Priest and SOLE TRUSTEE, Fr. Clarence Fonseca. He seems to be looking only at the money and not the consequences. The parishioners seem to be worried of the consequences, because most of them have seen the inconveniences this community’s functions have caused to Church activities. Every time they have a function, a large number converges and roads are choc o block. Earlier, since the population was sparse, the effects could not be felt. But with growth of population, both Catholics as well as others, the effect on the populace, and the Church activities are tremendous. I, being the Ex-Parishioner, am well versed with it.
This very community, in the year 2009 had held their World Convention at Marol, which created lot of issues, including the Parishioners being prevented from attending the daily Mass. This is the feedback that we have received from parishioners, which is very disturbing. Do we want the repeat of the same mess of 2009? Further this very community was trying their level best to construct a proposed road, passing through the Parish cemetery to their adjoining colony. Thanks to the opposition by Parishioners, it was stalled.
We can’t oppose functions by anyone, if they are held in their locality and use the public roads, even if they cause inconvenience to us. But we can certainly prevent it from happening in our backyard.
We perceive, the Parish priest has put monetary interest over the interest of our Community and the Church. This one incident will set a precedent and will become a regular feature in the Parish calendar. To know the ill effects of these functions on Church activities, one needs to be the Parishioner.
Besides, other elements in the society too, will demand the ground for their use, which could be detrimental to the health of the Parish. We therefore, call upon you to advise the Parish authorities to revoke their decision to lend the ground for the function.
The parish priest may be the SOLE TRUSTEE on the property, alright; but not on the sentiments, emotions and the rights of the parishioner, who would be countering a lot of inconvenience with one thoughtless act by the Parish Priest, now and forever.
Yours always in OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST,
Copy to:         Fr. Clarence Fonseca, Parish Priest, St. John the Evangelist Church, Marol.
