New Delhi:

The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue in the Vatican has wished the Indians on the occasion of Diwali, the festival of lights.

“May fellowship and fraternity shine forth more and more in your families and communities” Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, said in a statement.

The cardinal took the opportunity to call on the people of all the religion, especially young, to be peace makers.

“We would like to use this cherished tradition of sharing with you a reflection to explore the responsibility that Hindus, Christians and others have in doing everything possible to form all people, especially the young generation, into peace-makers,” he said.

He said that to form young men and women into people of peace is an urgent summon to collective engagement and common action.

If peace is to be authentic and enduring, it must be built on the pillars of truth, justice, love and freedom and all young men and women need to be taught above all to act truthfully and justly in love and freedom, the statement said.

Furthermore, in all education for peace, cultural differences ought surely to be treated as richness rather than a threat or danger, it added.

Diwali commemorates the return of Hindu Lord Rama, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, from his 14-year-long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana.

In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas and by bursting firecrackers.

This year the festival falls on Nov. 13.
