Mumbai:

The Bombay Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) decision to take 5m area of a 150-year-old church as a setback for the Poisar river-widening project has upset its parishioners.

The BMC has asked the Our Lady of Assumption church in Kandivli to surrender 0.5m to 4m of land at various points along the boundary wall in lieu of compensatory floor space index (FSI) for the church.

Apart from losing the playground in front of the church, what is upsetting parishioners more is that the society opposite the river, in which former deputy mayor Shailaja Girkar resides, has been asked to surrender only 1m land.

Churchgoers say they don’t have a problem with surrendering the land as it is for public welfare, but their issue is with the exception being made to the society.

The society was served a notice a year back and the church was served a notice after the retaining wall on the society’s side had been constructed.

“According to the law, all the affected parties should be served the notice together and before the commencement of the project,” said Lennon Miranda, a parishioner.

The project is being undertaken as part of the Brimstowad project, which began after the 2005 deluge in the city to augment the holding capacity of the river.

Civic officials have said that the setback area for the church is more as compared to the society due to the flow of the river.

“We are trying to train the river, widen it and construct a retaining wall around it. For this, we need different sizes of land along the river’s path and in exchange for the project, FSI will be given to the church,” said a civic official.

The church authorities say that they don’t need the extra FSI and that they will discuss the issue with other parishioners on Sunday to decide their next plan of action.
