A Jesus Christ statue, measuring 33.5 feet tall and billed as the tallest in the country, has been unveiled in Thiruvananthapuram.

Major Archbishop Mar Baselios Cleemis Catholicos of the Syro-MAlankara Church unveiled the statue Saturday.

The pristine white-colour figure of Christ with arms spread has been placed on top of a car porch of Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology in the city.

Premachandran, the sculptor of the statue, said that it has been made out of a mixture of fibre, wax and resin and given a marble finish.

About 30 workers toiled hard in the last 35 days to complete the work, he added.

The total cost of the construction of the statue is 1.5 million.

The eyes of the statue will light up in the dark as imported radium is painted on it.

According to the college authorities, the statue weighs around three tonnes.

Premachandran said that the statue was built as a memorial on the request of the parents of one Midhun Markose, a former student of the college who died in a road accident.

The statue is taller than the Christ statue unveiled recently in Bangalore that is 29 feet.
