President hails Catholic Church’s contributions

He expressed his deep regard for the Church’s service in the field of education and health.

New Delhi:

President Pranab Mukherjee says the Catholic Church has contributed immensely to advancement of Indian villages.

The newly elected president said this when a delegation of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), led by its President Cardinal Oswald Gracias, called on him on Monday.

Mukherjee expressed his deep regard for the Church’s service in the field of education and health.

“Christianity from its very beginning had strong roots in India,” said the president.

Cardinal Gracias told the president that the Church is really concerned about the harmony and peace among various religions in the country.

He assured the Mukherjee that the Catholic community will continue to work for peace, prosperity and harmony of the country as it has done in the past.

Besides the cardinal, CBCI secretary general Archbishop Albert D’Souza of Agra and CBCI Deputy Secretary General Fr. Joseph Chinnayyan were also present on the occasion.
