Bishop Mallavarapu, 63, had earlier served the Vijayawada diocese in the state for 10 years.

He was given a farewell by the diocesan clergy, religious and parishioners Tuesday.

Earlier on August 7, the Catholics of Vijayawada diocese have given a grand farewell to their bishop.

Thousands attended the function at Gundala Marian shrine grounds of Vijayawada to thank the prelate for his leading the diocese.

Bishop Mallavarapu led the Mass celebration with the diocesan consulters and 120 priests of the diocese.

He invited the gathering to join him to thank God for the peaceful growth in the diocese during his tenure.

Fr. Marianna, who delivered the homily, pointed out that the bishop had launched various spiritual programs that helped deepen people’s faith. The bishop’s “relentless struggle” to educate catholic children benefitted thousands of poor people, he hadded.

The prelate built a number of schools, hostels and boarding homes and arranged for scholarships in a bid to empower people through education and help the local Church.

The priest also acknowledged that Bishop Mallavarapu helped build “a sound catholic atmosphere in the diocese.”

To make the diocese self reliant, the prelate built a commercial block that fetches “a good income to the diocese,” Fr. Marianna said.

Bishop Prakash invited the gathering to visit the Visakhapatnam archdiocese, which is spread over three civil districts covering 25,950 square kilometers.

The 160-year-old archdiocese now has 250,186 Catholics served by 154, priests and more than 500 religious.
