Protest in front of the school

Bhopal:A widow and her three children on Wednesday attempted to commit suicide before a Christian school in Bhopal.

Pushpa Monteiro accused St. Francis School principal Brother N. T. Cyriac of insulting her children for not paying the fees.

Locals, however, stopped the woman and her two daughters and son from consuming some poisonous substance.

Monteiro said that her children, two in the eighth grade and one in the fifth, were made to stand outside their classrooms for not paying the fees despite being eligible for concessions.

The woman, who works as a maid, said that earlier the school used to give them concessions on account of poverty.

This was discontinued after Brother Cyric took over as the principal a week ago. She alleged that even poor Christian students, entitled for free education, were denied admission this year.

Monteiro also told the crowd in front of the school that even those who already got admission were being humiliated before other students.

Confirming the incident, Nirmal Jude, secretary of Catholic-Isai Kalyan Parishad (Catholic Christian welfare forum), said the new principal was a “rude” person.

He said the principal humiliated poor Christian students who were not able to pay fees despite his school being a charitable school.

The forum, he said, has already taken up the issue with Archbishop Leo Cornelio of Bhopal and appealed him to exempt fees of Christian children whose parents’ annual income was less than 10,000 rupees.

Jude said the forum would protest if the Christian schools continued to deny admission to poor children from the community.

However, Brother Cyriac termed the allegations as “baseless.”

“Being a missionary school, we never deny admission to Catholic children and those who deserved concession were given the same. So was the case with the widow who tried to commit suicide,” he said.

Brother Cyriac also alleged that some vested interests have influenced Monteiro.

Meanwhile, the police reached the spot but no case was registered.

Goa Church asks govt to be humane

The recruitment and offer letters were given to 200 selected candidates.

Panaji:

The Goa Church today asked the state government to recruit 200 field supervisors whose pre-election recruitment has caused a row.

The Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), the social arm of the Goa archdiocese, asked the Bharatiya Janata Party government to show a “humane consideration” and appoint the supervisors in its mining and geology department.

The recruitment has created a row as the candidates were appointed by the former Congress-led government on the eve of the assembly polls held in March.

CSJP secretary Fr. Maverick Fernandes, in a letter to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, said, he denial of jobs to the candidates amounted to the violation of human rights.

“Several of the recruits after receiving the ‘Offer of Appointment’ have quit their earlier secure jobs to report for duty,” he said, adding many have families who depend on their income.

“This becomes a human rights issue as it amounts to denial of a sustainable livelihood for no fault of theirs,” the priest said.

Fr. Maverick said the recruited candidates satisfied the necessary requirements and that the previous government had followed proper hiring processes.

Amid allegations of sheltering illegal mining and deliberately weakening the mining and geology department, former chief minister Digambar Kamat had hurriedly announced the recruitment of 230 field supervisors for the mining department in February.

The recruitment and offer letters were given to 200 selected candidates.

The new government initiated a vigilance probe into the jobs by the mines and other departments as well.

Official sources say the vigilance probe was in the last stage of completion.
