SEVEN CRORE PROJECT, TO BUILD A CHURCH.

Hello Friends,
As the headline suggests, the news is a happy one. It was whispered into our ears by a tiny humming bird. We are quite happy about it.  Every Catholic would like his Parish Church to be the most beautiful and large enough for entire congregation to assemble within. However, we are not sure if it is true. We therefore, approached Archbishop Cardinal Oswald Gracias, through a letter, which has been attached below, to check the authenticity of this news. The matter was also discussed during our meeting with him, recently.
In the letter we have also raised a few questions, seeking answers from Church authorities.
We are particularly concerned about the involvement of a National level politician, with this project. If it is true, what are going to be the repercussion on working of the Church after the project is completed? Will there be plaques put up in his name, giving him permanent advertisement space, for all his political campaigns? Yes, it is a trend adopted by some of the Parish Priests these days. The matter related to OL of Egypt Parish, Kalina, must be fresh in your minds. The parish Priest, in whose tenure these plaques were put up, has been transferred. It remains to be seen, Whether the new Parish Priest takes initiative to uphold Parishioners will, and uproot those plaques?
Similar plaques are put up in the compound of OL of Lourdes Church, Orlem; in the name of couple of Politicians, viz Sanjay Nirupam and Aslam Sheikh, for helping Church Authorities to put up sun shade and paver blocks within precincts of the Church.
Anyway, St. Anthony’s Parish needs a Church, big enough, looking at the rapid growth in number of parishioners. However, we expect, rather every parishioner would expect that every penny spent on this project, would go into construction of the Church, and does not find feet, leading to someone’s bank account. But how would the parishioner know about it? Certainly not, by concealing the facts related to financial expenditure from them. What we are trying to arrive at, is Transparency over the project. We hope, the Parish Priest Fr. Austin Norris, in his wisdom, understand the necessity, to be TRANSPARENT.
We are not sure, if the project is really on. Fr. Austin Norris will be the right authority to confirm or deny it.

Most Rev Cardinal Oswald Gracias
Archbishop of Bombay,

Sub:    RUPEES SEVEN CRORE PROJECT, TO REBUILD/RENOVATE CHURCH.
Your Eminence,
It is reliably learnt that the outgoing Parish Priest, Fr. Ajit Bandekar, of St. Anthony’s Church, Malwani, has given approval to the project, costing Rs. Seventy Crores. It is a matter to appreciate, because, the parish needs a larger structure to provide space for ever increasing population of the parish.
However, the parishioners would like to have answers to following Questions:
Ø  What is the guarantee that the cost of the project is not inflated by outgoing Parish Priest Fr. Ajit Bandekar, who has been found guilty of inflating the cost of Candle stand and manipulating tender document, to meet his own end?
Ø  Are the present members of property committee, who have been found helping the Parish Priest to carry out the nefarious activities mentioned above, worthy of being involved with the project of this size?
Ø  Name of a National level Politician is being associated with this project. What is his exact role? Is it limited to helping parish authorities, to obtain required permissions, or beyond? We are asking this question because; his name is being glorified by his very close associate, who is supposed to be very active in Church property matters.
Ø  The Existing Edifice of the Church is in the Heritage list of India, we believe. What happens to that? Is it going to be demolished, or will be retained as it is?
Your Eminence, Parishioners will definitely be happy about the project. However, they would also expect a semblance of transparency to this project, because, the amount, we believe will be spent from parish coffers. Each rupee spent must be accounted for, in transparent manner.
We hope the incoming Parish Priest Fr. Austin Norris will take note of this.
Yours always, in our LORD JESUS CHRIST;

GREG R. PEREIRA

Thank you Greg for the prompt reply… In the latest edition of Silent Voice you have so very boldly published abt the so called plaques carrying the names of politicians at Orlem in our church premises…… It was there… it’s a thing of the past..
In all fairness i am asking for an Apology……. coz Silent Voice is in circulation all over… the name of our Parish is tarnished… improper facts is being published …. it brings bad image….PL issue a clarification in your next edition… that the plaques are no more…
This will bring credibility and respect for all of us

      Dear Mr. D’Costa,

Thank you for pointing out the error. It is a typographical mistake and should read as seven crores and not seventy crores. We regret the same. A clarification will be issued along with the next VOICEMAIL, which is due.

      Thank you once again.
