An Anglo Indian parliamentarian has accused the Congress party and its general secretary Rahul Gandhi of insulting Catholics and her community after she was unceremoniously ousted from a stage.

Ingrid Mcleod has pledged never to attend Gandhi’s programs again after she was asked to get off a stage where Gandhi was seated in Raipur on Saturday.

Mcleod, who belongs to Chhattisgarh and is one of two nominated members of the Anglo-Indian community in the Lok Sabha, lower house of parliament. After the incident, she resigned her posts in the party’s state unit.

She described the treatment meted out to her as an “insult” for all Catholics and Anglo-Indians across the country.

Mcleod went to the dais during a training session for Congress functionaries. However, B K Hariprasad, who heads the Congress party in Chhattisgarh, asked her to get off.

The 43-year-old parliamentarian did not protest, but later met Gandhi.

Mcleod’s husband Rodney Mcleod said his wife complained to the Congress general secretary about Hariprasad’s “rude behaviour,” Gandhi ignored her. “Instead, he said it was he who had ordered Hariprasad to ask her to get off.”

Mcloid then told Gandhi that she regretted coming to his program and handed him a letter.

Mcleod declined to speak, but her husband said she was “disturbed.”

In her letter to Gandhi, she said her being asked off the dais was a great insult not only because she was the only woman MP from the state but also to the Catholic and Anglo-Indian community in Chhattisgarh.

“I will not attend any of your program in future. I take this opportunity to resign from the post of permanent invitee to Chhattisgarh Congress Committee and also post of PCC delegate Chhattisgarh Congress Committee.”

Mcleod, who describes herself as a social worker, was a nominated member of the Chhattisgarh assembly during 2001-2003. She was nominated to the Lok Sabha in 2004, and renominated in 2009.

The other nominated member of the Anglo-Indian community in the current Lok Sabha is Charles Dias from Kerala.

Hariprasad said he had not read Mcleod’s resignation letter, “but she should not have breached protocol.”

State president of the Congress Nand Kumar Patel said, “Protocol demanded that only a few were allowed on the dais. We politely asked her to get off.”
