A Catholic front in Goa has demanded an apology from former Congress legislature Churchill Alemao for blaming the church for his party’s defeat in the recent state assembly polls.

Condemning the allegations leveled against the church, All Goa Catholic Minority Front (AGCMF) said that his “baseless comments” are a result of “frustration” at having lost the elections.

“Alemao should have gracefully accepted the mandate of the people who wanted a change. He should give a public apology to the Church authorities and the people of Goa at large,” said Barnabe Sapeco, convenor of AGCMF, in a press statement.

Alemao, the state minister for public works department in the previous government, was defeated from Navelim constituency in the March 3 polls.

The front also welcomed state chief minister Manohar Parrikar’s statement that he would get the dates of the International Film Festival of India changed as it coincides with the novenas of St Francis Xavier.

It also condemned the desecration of a cemetery and kabrastan at Curchorem.

“The minorities acted wisely and showed restraint which should be respected by all sections of society,” the statement said.

AGCMF urged the government to nab the culprits who try to destroy the secular fabric of the state for their selfish ends.
